Science City Hamburg Bahrenfeld
Science City Hamburg Bahrenfeld: Knowledge Creates a City
Science City Hamburg Bahrenfeld is one of Hamburg's largest and most important future projects. Here, cutting-edge international research and excellent education are combined with innovative production and a liveable urban neighbourhood. Science City can already be experienced today: the existing campus is characterised by renowned partners such the Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron DESY, European XFEL, Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft, Max-Planck-Gesellschaft, University of Hamburg and many other high-profile institutions and organisations.
Science City continues to grow around this scientific core – covering a total area of around 125 hectares. The campus is being expanded to include state-of-the-art large-scale research facilities – most notably PETRA IV, which will be the world's most powerful X-ray microscope in the future. At the same time, new spaces with a high level of sustainable amenity are being created: start-up labs, business parks and an innovation-friendly environment are bringing research into practical application.
Opposite, adjacent to Volkspark Altona’s green areas, a new lively quarter is being developed. Quartiere am Volkspark combine new teaching buildings, a diverse range of affordable housing for over 7,000 people, places for education, childcare and sport, and green corridors. Development follows the principle of the 10-minute city enhancing future-oriented sustainable mobility. The quarter will be optimally connected by a new rapid transit line.
Science City Hamburg Bahrenfeld strengthens Hamburg as an international science location and will become a driving force for integrated economic and urban development – with unique opportunities for the city of Hamburg.
A modern metropolis needs innovative ideas and sustainable solutions. HafenCity Hamburg GmbH (HCH) has been providing impetus for this for more than two decades. The company’s expertise covers the entire process of planning, negotiating and implementing urban development. This not only benefits HafenCity, Europe's largest inner-city waterfront development project, but also the three other major projects for which HCH and its group companies are responsible: Grasbrook, Billebogen and Science City Hamburg Bahrenfeld.
